In Malaysia, the demand for electricity is growing in tandem with its GDP growth. The growth forecasted for electricity has shown an increase of 3.7% in 2012 compared to 3.2% in 2011, driven by strong demand from commercial and domestic sectors. For the period until 2020, the average projected demand for electricity is expected to grow at 3.2%. Based on this forecast, the country is going to need even more electrical energy as it strives to achieve the high-income economy status. This Report sets out to analyse the effectiveness of the various energy policies and initiatives that Malaysia has adopted, and how they have affected the reliability and security of energy supply. This Report considers the various options from a technical perspective for energy security consistent with other existing energy policies currently in place. This Advisory Report is the final product arising from a series of meetings among members of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia’s Energy Committee, energy experts, energy players, relevant government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other key stakeholders.
